Majilis approved ratification of the Treaty between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation on the Kazakh-Russian state border. As it was noted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan K. Tokayev, the need for the delimitation of the Kazakh-Russian border was dictated by the fact that the border line between Kazakhstan and Russia has never had a legal description. The Majilis approved the draft of the law "On ratification of the Agreement between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation on the Kazakh-Russian state border" at the plenary meeting. As it was noted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan K. Tokayev, the need for the delimitation of the Kazakh-Russian border was dictated by the fact that the border line between Kazakhstan and Russia has never had a legal description. This fact troubled the activity of the border units and law enforcement agencies in ensuring the proper monitoring of persons and goods moving across the borders, as well as in establishing of the economic barrier in order to prevent smuggling, the traffic of drugs and illegal migration. According to the minister, the international legal formalization of the Kazakh-Russian border will allow us to promote the customs, border, health and other forms of control at the border. The agreement between Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation on the Kazakh-Russian state border was signed by the presidents of the two countries on January 18, 2005 in Moscow. The total length of the border is more than 7,590 kilometers.
